I need you to know I love you still / I don't like me
|
This is likely Dan Campbell speaking to his son and wife.
In the album documentary, Coughing Out Embers, Campbell says to his son, “The depression comes from a place of being afraid of failing you. Not in any absence of joy of your existence”
It is important to Campbell that his son understands that his pain is not because of him even though it happened in tandem with his birth. It is a larger battle that Campbell is still learning how to fight.
He wrote this song as a bit of an apology to his wife, too. Campbell referred to himself as “sensibly useless” in regards to him battling depression and trying to be a new father at the same time. It is important that his wife knows that it isn’t because he doesn’t love and support her, it is because he is facing an exhausting battle that causes him to not like himself.
